Breakdown

Curl Combo out of Shotgun Doubles gives you a three level stretch with a curl route from the boundary receiver, a deep out breaking from the inside slot toward the sideline, and a wheel route from the flanker that climbs vertically up the numbers after releasing outside. On the backside the single receiver runs an inside breaking route that clears underneath space, while the offensive line picks up standard pass protection with no play action or RPO elements shown. The primary read starts with the wheel route up the seam if the corner bites on the flat, then works down to the deep out and finally the backside in-breaker as the checkdown against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with no safety help over the flanker is the biggest tell, take the wheel route shot immediately since the corner has no leverage on a vertical release. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender jumping the flat area will open a throwing lane on the deep out from the slot receiver. Watch the strong side linebacker depth at the snap, if he sinks into a curl zone the middle window tightens and you should work the ball to the wheel or the backside route instead. Cover 4 quarters coverage with safeties reading the wheel route early is the toughest shell to beat here, since it takes away both the vertical shot and squeezes the deep out. A user controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle zone is trying to jump the backside in breaking route, so hold that throw until the wheel or out routes are fully covered before checking it down.

Usage Tips

Check the corner over the flanker before the snap, if he is playing tight or shows blitz the wheel route will win over the top almost every time.

Use this on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4.

Hot route the backside single receiver into a shallow drag if you are getting pressure quickly, that gives you a faster underneath outlet against blitz looks.

Pair this call with Curl Flats or Slant Flat later in a series so the wheel route look starts to draw over aggressive flat defenders and linebackers cheating outside.

If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap, prioritize the deep out from the slot since the wheel route will have a safety waiting over the top.
