Breakdown

PA QB Choice is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Doubles that dresses up like a run fake before attacking downfield. Off the play fake, the backside receiver runs a deep corner route while the frontside receiver climbs vertically up the seam, and the inline TE releases on a deep out breaking toward the sideline. Underneath, the outlet receiver runs a quick drag across the formation as a checkdown option, giving the QB a true high-low choice read between the corner, the seam vertical, and the drag if the deep shots are covered. This is a man beater built to punch through single high looks and exploit any linebacker or safety who bites on the run fake.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the safety is aligned as true single high since that tells you the corner and seam routes will have soft help over the top only in the middle of the field. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard on the run fake it opens a throwing window on the seam route and drag underneath. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exploited by the corner route since the receiver can stack and separate on the break. Cover 2 or two high safety shells with an aggressive underneath zone linebacker sitting on the drag will bait the QB into the checkdown, so be ready to climb the ladder to the seam or corner instead. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the flat or seam area post-snap, since a smart user will jump the underneath drag or the seam route to bait a mistimed throw.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety alignment pre-snap since the play action fake is designed to freeze linebackers and put the deep corner and seam routes in conflict with only one deep defender.

Use the play fake to your advantage on early down and distance, ideally second and short or first down, so the run fake actually holds the box and linebackers step up.

If the corner shows soft coverage at the snap, motion or reset your protection with a hot route to keep the TE in as an extra blocker against pressure looks.

Progress read from the deep corner route first, then work to the seam vertical, and finally check down to the underneath drag if both are blanketed.

Pair this with a hard play action run play like Inside Zone or HB Counter from the same set so the defense has to respect the run action, then hit them with this shot play once they start jumping the fake.
