Play diagram for X Under Seams from Shotgun Doubles in Madden 27

Quick Reference

Breakdown

X Under Seams out of Shotgun Doubles is a five man route concept built to attack the middle of the field with vertical stress. Both the X and the slot receiver to that side release into seam routes that split the hashes, while the backside receiver runs a deep in and the TE releases into an under route across the field underneath the seams. The RB checks down to the far flat as a shallow crosser, giving the quarterback a true progression read: seams first, then work back down to the under route and the flat check as the middle of the field opens. This is a zone beater at its core, designed to split zone defenders vertically with the two seam routes while the under route occupies underneath defenders and gives you a checkdown against man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety alignment. Two high safeties invite the seam read, while a single high safety or robber look means the middle seams will be contested and you should progress faster to the under route. Post-snap, watch the middle linebacker and any user controlled defender dropping into a lurk position over the under route. If he sits and reads your eyes, look off the under route and go directly to the seams. This play beats Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells because the seam routes split the deep defenders before they can rotate, and it beats zone blitzes since the under route and RB flat give you quick outlets against pressure. It struggles against Cover 3 with a deep middle defender sitting in the seam window, and it is vulnerable to disguised man blitzes where a nickel or linebacker jumps the under route since that is the shortest, quickest developing throw. Key the cornerback depth pre-snap. Corners playing off coverage signal zone drops behind them, which opens the seam throw, while tight press alignment suggests man coverage where you should widen the seam route with a hot route release if available.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs when you want to stress two deep safety shells with a MOFO look, since the dual seam routes create a natural bracket read against Cover 2 and Cover 4.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties. If they roll to single high after the snap, hot route the backside deep in to a comeback or work the under route immediately since the seams will get squeezed by a robber or deep third defender.

Against man coverage, trust the seam routes to win vertically if you have a size or speed mismatch at the X or slot, but be ready to check down to the under route or RB flat if the corner gets a clean jam.

Pair this with 45 Quick Base or Curl Flats earlier in a series to condition the defense to expect shorter routes, then hit X Under Seams to punish linebackers who sit low in zone drops.

Best used on second and medium or third and long when you need a chunk gain over the middle, since the seam routes naturally attack the void between underneath zone defenders and deep safeties.
