Breakdown

Double Sluggo aligns out of Shotgun Doubles with two outside receivers stemming vertical before breaking hard on slant-and-go routes, both stacking corners for explosive shot plays down each sideline. The inside slot runs an out-and-up double move to the flat that pulls linebackers and safeties before turning it upfield, while the running back runs a shallow drag underneath as a check-down and the backside slot works a deep crossing route to clear the middle of the field. This is a full-blown man beater built to attack aggressive corners playing outside leverage, with the primary read progression starting outside on the sluggo routes, then working to the flat-to-post double move, and finally checking down to the drag if the deep shots are covered.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety looks before the snap, this tells you the defense is vulnerable to the double outside sluggo routes since there is no help split over both verticals. Watch cornerback depth and technique at the line, corners playing up in press or tight man coverage are the primary trigger for throwing the sluggo since their eyes will be on the underneath slant fake. Key the flat defender or nickel corner on the double move route, if he sits on the initial out break instead of staying patient he will get beat over the top on the up phase. Two deep safety shells or split safety zone coverage shut this play down hard, both sluggo routes run into the deep half defenders, so bail out to the drag or check down against Cover 2 or Cover 4 looks. Track blitz timing and any user-controlled defender dropping into a shallow zone or spy, since a delayed rush or lurking linebacker can jump the drag route and turn a checkdown into a turnover.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap look at corner alignment before the snap, this play thrives against press man or corners sitting tight to the line because the slant portion of the sluggo will open a clean release into the vertical stem.

Use motion or a hot route on the backside crosser to hold a robber defender or deep safety if you see a single high shell, this prevents a lurking defender from jumping the intermediate crossing route.

Save this call for third and long or two minute drill situations where you need an explosive gain, the double vertical shots create big play equity but require time for the routes to develop.

Pair this play with Curl Flats or Drag Under earlier in a drive to condition the defense to expect quick underneath throws, then hit them with Double Sluggo once corners start jumping short routes.

If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap, prioritize the flat-to-post double move or the drag underneath since the true sluggo routes will be capped by help over the top.
