Double Sluggo out of Shotgun Doubles sends both outside receivers on sluggo (slant and go) routes, stemming inside before breaking vertically up the sideline to attack cornerbacks deep. The slot receiver runs an out and up flat route into the boundary while the running back releases outside then works a delayed drag underneath across the field. This is a man beater built to isolate corners on double moves, with the primary read progressing from either sluggo route based on the cornerback's leverage, then working down to the flat route and drag as checkdown options if the double moves are taken away.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with a single high safety is the biggest green light for this play since both sluggos can win over the top with no deep help rotated to the boundary. Watch cornerback press alignment at the line, if they are playing outside leverage in man they are vulnerable to the inside slant portion of the sluggo before the vertical break. Cover 3 or Cover 1 with aggressive underneath zone drops can bait a quick sluggo throw only to have a deep third defender undercut it, so track the deep outside zone defender's depth before committing. Cover 2 shells with corners sitting on the flat route can jump the underneath breaks of the sluggo, so be ready to layer the throw over the top rather than into the break. Blitz packages that send extra pressure off the edge can outrun the running back's release into the drag route, so identify overload blitz looks pre snap and be ready to get the ball out on the near side sluggo quickly.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or in second and short situations when you have a favorable one on one matchup outside against a cornerback who bites on double moves.

Check pre snap for single high safety looks or man press alignment on your outside receivers since that tells you the sluggo has room to work behind the corner.

If you see two high safeties rotating hard to the sluggo side, hot route the drag into a deeper crossing route or peek the flat route immediately for a quick completion.

Pair this call with Double Slants or RPO Peek Slant earlier in a series so the defense starts jumping short routes, then hit them with Double Sluggo once cornerbacks start sitting on underneath breaks.

User the drag route defender manually if you expect a linebacker spy or delayed blitz, since the drag becomes your late developing answer against pressure.
