Breakdown

Y Shallow Cross out of Shotgun Doubles 11 personnel gives you a five man route concept built around the shallow crosser as the primary read. The Y runs a shallow drag across the formation from the boundary side, the outside receiver on that side stems vertical then breaks to a corner route up the sideline, and the slot receiver runs a short out that turns upfield into a deep flag once he clears the shallow. On the backside, the isolated receiver runs a straight vertical seam while the backfield player releases into a short flat or check route underneath the shallow. This is a man beater at its core, using the shallow drag to create natural rub traffic against man coverage while stacking a vertical shot on the backside for a big play window.

Defensive Reads

Watch for man coverage indicators like tight press alignment on the outside receivers, the shallow drag is designed to pick and separate against man defenders trying to trail across the field. Identify single high shells such as Cover 1 or Cover 3 pre-snap, these are the most vulnerable to the backside vertical seam once the safety commits to the shallow side. Post snap, key the underneath linebackers, if they sink hard on the shallow crosser it opens the flag route developing behind them on the slot receiver. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safeties sitting deep and outside, this can choke off both the corner route and the seam, forcing you to live off the shallow and flat underneath. Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow crossing lane, this is the biggest threat to the play since it takes away your first read and forces a fast progression to the flag or seam.

Usage Tips

Read the shallow first every single snap, it is your built in answer against almost any coverage and it gets you positive yardage even when the rest of the concept is covered.

Check the backside cornerback depth before the snap, if he is playing off man or shows soft zone the backside vertical seam becomes a live shot play once the shallow clears the box.

Use this play on second and medium or third and short since the shallow crosser and flag route give you multiple completion windows underneath the sticks.

Hot route the flat man to a quick out if you see zone drops sitting underneath the shallow, this opens a checkdown against Cover 3 sink or Cover 4 that clogs the middle.

Pair this concept with Drag Under or Mesh from the same set to keep defenses guessing on shallow crosser timing, then hit them with Y Cross or Flanker Dig later in the drive once they start jumping the underneath routes.
