The running back releases out of the backfield, stems vertically, then breaks flat toward the sideline, creating a natural rub off the initial release that makes linebackers and man corners work through traffic to stay attached. Underneath, the receivers work short combos to hold off zone defenders and clear space, so the primary read progression starts with the HB angle against man coverage or blitz and works to the shorter zone beaters if the linebacker sits on the angle route or the defense drops into zone.

Defensive Reads

Key the middle linebacker or nickel defender assigned to the HB out of the backfield, since his depth and leverage tell you if he can stay attached through the angle break. Watch for a nano blitz or fire zone look where the defense brings extra rushers up front while dropping a linebacker into the passing lane, which can jump the angle route if the user recognizes the concept early. Check the middle of the field pre-snap for a single high safety, since that usually signals man coverage underneath and makes the angle route the go to read immediately at the snap.

If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 3 with linebackers sitting in short zones, hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant to give yourself a zone beater option instead of forcing the angle route.

Motion the HB or use a quick pre-snap shift to see if a linebacker follows, confirming man coverage and giving you a green light to trust the angle route against a blitz.

Pair this play with Curl Flats or Drag Under in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the HB angle conflict and traditional curl or drag concepts, making it harder for defenders to sit on any single route.
