Indy Outs from Shotgun Doubles is a pure out concept built to attack zone defenses with horizontal stretches. Both outside receivers run hard outs to the boundary, the slot receiver runs a short pivot/out breaking underneath, and the middle route works as a crossing dig underneath the outs to occupy linebackers, while the running back stays in to help protect. This is a zone beater designed to sit receivers in the soft spots between the cornerback and flat defender, with the primary read starting on the backside out (the red route) before working back to the frontside out and shallow crosser underneath.
Look for two-high safety shells pre-snap, since single high safety looks let corners squat harder on the outs and jump the route. Watch the flat defenders at the snap, if they widen quickly with the out routes it confirms zone coverage and the throwing lanes will open late. Identify any nickel or slot defender showing blitz, since the shallow crosser underneath is your answer if the middle of the field is vacated. Man coverage with press corners can jump the out routes early, so be ready to look off and reset to the underneath crosser as a man beater outlet. Watch for a lurking linebacker sitting in the shallow zone, as this can undercut the crosser and bait a turnover if you are not selling the out routes first.
Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells since the flat defenders have to widen for the outs while the corners sink deep, opening the void underneath.
Check the cornerback depth pre-snap, if they are playing off you can hit the out routes on time before the flat defender closes.
Use the underneath crosser as a hot read versus blitzes since it clears out quickly and gives the quarterback a check down against man pressure.
Pair this with Curl Flats or Y-Sail in your play calling sequence so defenses cannot sit on the out concept without opening up curl or sail windows.
Best called on second and medium to long distance where the sideline routes give you a clean chain-moving option against zone drops.
