PA Shot out of Shotgun Doubles is a play-action shot play with three vertical releases designed to attack downfield off a run fake. The backside receiver runs a straight go route up the sideline, the inside receiver breaks outside on a deep out and go combo, and the boundary receiver runs a clean vertical seam. With no shallow crossers or checkdowns shown, this is a pure man beater built to isolate one on one matchups deep, and the primary read progression starts with the seam runner working from inside out to the sideline go route based on which cornerback bites hardest on the play fake.
Defensive Reads
Identify single high safety alignment pre-snap since that confirms man coverage underneath and opens up all three verticals against Cover 1 or Cover 3. Watch the flat defender and cornerback leverage on the out and go route, if the corner sits low on the out portion you have a clean win over the top. Key on linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who bite the run fake create wide throwing lanes on the inside seam route. Two deep safety shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 are the counter, since they take away the top of all three routes and force you into a low percentage throw. Watch for user controlled defenders lurking underneath the seam route, since a smart defender can jump the inside break if you telegraph the throw too early.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs like first and ten or second and short so the play fake actually holds linebackers and safeties for an extra beat.
Check pre-snap for single high shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3, since the lack of underneath options means Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties can sit on these verticals.
Use the pump fake from the play action to freeze a user controlled safety before committing to your first read on the inside seam.
Pair this with 45 Quick Base or RPO Peek Slant earlier in a drive so the defense respects the run fake and starts creeping linebackers up before you hit them with this shot play.
If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, take the deep out and go combo route since it creates natural separation against trail technique.
