WR Seams out of Shotgun Doubles 11 personnel sends both outside receivers on vertical seam routes up the numbers while the two inside receivers (slot and TE/attached WR) run quick out cuts into the flat to hold off corners and clear space underneath. The HB stays in to check release before working a short flat route on the right side, giving the QB a built-in checkdown if the seams are covered deep. This is a man beater at its core, designed to attack Cover 1 and Cover 3 by stretching the seams vertically while the flat routes occupy underneath defenders, with the primary read progression going from the backside seam to the frontside seam, then down to the flat routes and HB check.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense shows two deep safeties or one, since Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells are vulnerable to the seam routes splitting the safeties. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the middle linebacker sits shallow to jump the flat routes the seam behind him becomes wide open for a big gain. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the seams running vertically past the corners, especially against Cover 0 or Cover 1 blitz packages. User-controlled defenders lurking in the middle of the field can jump the frontside seam, so read the QB icon and drop of any user rover before committing to that throw. Zone defenses with sped up linebacker drops into the hook zones can undercut the seam routes, so check the flat route conversion as your answer if the deep throw window closes quickly.

Usage Tips

Look at the safety alignment before the snap, if both safeties are deep and the corners are tight to the line you have a great matchup for the two seam routes against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells.

Hot route the flat routes into quick slants or hitches if you see man coverage with no underneath help, since the flats are already occupying defenders and a slant conversion adds another explosive option.

Use this play on second and medium to third and long situations where defenses often sit in zone shells, since the vertical seams put immediate stress on the hook and deep zone defenders.

Pair WR Seams with Curl Flats or Double Slants in your play-calling sequence so defenses cannot sit on the vertical shot, forcing linebackers to respect both underneath and deep threats.

If you see a single high safety rotate late, immediately key the seam route away from the rotation since that side will have a clean vertical lane against man or zone.
