Mtn HB Slip Screen is a screen pass out of Shotgun Doubles that uses motion to help sell the perimeter action while the offensive line and HB set up a slip screen underneath. Off the diagram, two receivers on the left run a vertical stem into a corner route and a slot receiver clearing out on a deep in behind it, while the TE on the right releases outside then breaks into a deep corner, dragging coverage away from the backfield. The HB sneaks out to the flat behind a wall of blockers, giving the QB an easy quick throw to the screen as the primary read once the linebackers bite on the pass fakes upfield.

Defensive Reads

Key the linebackers immediately after the snap, since flowing hard toward the pass fakes upfield is the tell that the screen is wide open. Watch for a spy or a defender staying home in the backfield, which is the biggest counter to this concept and forces you to check into a different progression. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell with deep safeties sitting back, the corner and deep in routes on the left are unlikely to be there quickly, so rely on the screen as your first read. Avoid calling this into a heavy inside blitz look with no outside contain, since fast off ball linebackers can read the screen and blow it up before the blockers get set.
