Shark HB Wheel out of Shotgun Doubles sends the HB on a wheel route from the backfield up the sideline, while the two receivers to that side clear out with a deep vertical and a corner breaking route to occupy the safety and cornerback over the top. On the backside, the slot runs an out breaking route toward the sideline off a shallow crossing stem and the outside receiver runs a deep comeback up the numbers, and the offensive line stays in to pass protect with no play-action fake shown. This is a man beater built to exploit linebackers and safeties who try to carry the HB out of the backfield, with the primary read progression starting on the HB wheel against man leverage before working to the backside out and comeback combo if the wheel is covered.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check if a linebacker or slot corner is aligned tight over the HB, since that alignment signals man coverage and a green light for the wheel. Watch the deep safety depth before the snap, because a single high safety cheating to the wheel side will jump the route and turn it into a pick six. Post-snap, key the flow of the second level defenders: if the linebacker covering the HB gets picked off by the receiver's release, the wheel is wide open. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender to the wheel side can undercut the route, so if you see the corner sink into the flat before the snap, look backside immediately. Blitzes that bring extra rushers off the edge to the HB side can disrupt the wheel's timing at the release, so identify overload fronts and check the backside comeback as a quick outlet.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to see if a linebacker shifts with the HB, since that confirms man coverage and tells you the wheel will be open down the sideline.
Throw the wheel early and lead it to the numbers so the HB can run through the catch, because any hesitation lets a lurking safety close the window.
Against zone shells, work the backside out and comeback combo first since the wheel route can get squeezed by a deep half safety sitting on top.
This play hits best on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more willing to play man coverage or blitz, since the wheel exploits both.
Pair this call with Curl Flats or Double Slants earlier in the drive to condition linebackers to sit on shorter routes, then hit the wheel when they bite on the flat fake.
