Breakdown

Corner Strike out of Shotgun Doubles is a two-man route concept on the right side paired with a deep clear-out on the left. The right outside receiver runs a corner route while the slot receiver underneath him breaks outside on a flat/out route, creating a high-low stretch on the flat defender and deep corner defender. On the backside, the outside receiver runs a deep comeback that sits down outside while the slot receiver runs a deep post that crosses the field, drawing coverage away and clearing space. The primary read is the corner route on the right, working down to the flat route underneath it if the corner is taken away, with the backside comeback as a late outlet against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth on the right side, if the safety is shaded inside or playing a two-high shell with soft outside leverage, the corner route has a clean lane. Watch the flat defender at the snap, a linebacker or nickel corner sinking too deep opens the underneath flat throw immediately. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender lurking in the intermediate zone on the right side, since a smart user can jump the corner route if he reads quarterback eyes. Cover 3 with a hard-charging flat defender and deep third corner can squeeze this concept, forcing the quarterback to the backside comeback or eating a sack. Man coverage with press at the line disrupts route timing on the corner, so look for late safety help rotating over the top before committing to the throw.

Usage Tips

Attack Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells since the corner route sits in the void between the cornerback and safety before either can fully commit.

Check the flat defender pre-snap: if he sits wide at the snap, throw the corner immediately since the window will collapse fast against zone.

Hot route the backside slot post into a deep dig or drag if you see man coverage across the board to give yourself a quicker underneath answer.

Use this play on second and long or third and medium when you need a chunk gain and defenses start sitting on shorter routes.

Pair Corner Strike with Curl Flats or Slant Flat from this set to keep defenses guessing between quick underneath throws and the deeper corner shot, then hit Corner Strike once you see the defense creeping up.
