PA Slot Post is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Doubles that uses a run fake to hold linebackers before releasing a post from the slot as the primary vertical threat. On the play side, the outer receiver runs a shallow out while the slot receiver breaks across the field on the post, and away from the fake the backside receiver runs an out with the far outside receiver running a corner route off a stem. The play action freezes underneath defenders, so the read progression starts with the post attacking the middle of the field, then works to the corner route on the backside if the safety jumps the post, with the shallow out as the checkdown against tighter man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch for single high safety shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1, since the post route has a clean lane to split the deep middle once the safety commits to run support. Man coverage on the slot receiver is the ideal matchup, especially if the defense uses a linebacker or slower nickel corner in man since the post will separate vertically. Zone defenses with two deep safeties can rob the post, so if you see a Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell pre snap, be ready to work the backside corner route or check down to the shallow out instead. Look for defenders staying home on the run fake, if the linebackers do not bite and immediately drop into their zone or man landmarks, the window on the post tightens quickly. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can be an issue on the play fake so a hard edge blitz or contain rush can disrupt the timing before the post fully develops.

Usage Tips

Sell the play fake by holding the ball on the run action as long as possible to freeze the linebackers before looking to the post. Use this on early downs or in second and short situations where the defense expects run based on personnel and formation tendencies. Check the safety alignment pre snap, if you see two high safeties rotate to a single high shell, the post window opens up wider against man coverage. Hot route the backside out receiver into a deeper comeback if you are facing a corner playing off coverage, since the natural out route can get jumped by an aggressive corner. Pair this call with HB Counter or Inside Zone earlier in a drive to set up the play fake read and make linebackers bite harder on the post shot.
