Overview

Sim Focusedtargeting Rn Offense is a 191 play specialty offense built around heavy personnel and downhill running, with just enough Shotgun to keep a defense from sitting in base. Shotgun leads the book at 50 plays (26%) across 4 sets, but Singleback (46 plays, 24%), I Form (38 plays, 20%) and Strong I (28 plays, 15%) combine for 112 plays, meaning nearly 60% of this playbook is snapped from under center with a fullback or a second tight end available. That is a very different shape than the spread specialty books most opponents are used to defending, and it is the reason 23, 21 and 22 personnel are all in the personnel list alongside 11.

The concept list tells you exactly what the game plan is: Power, Power Run, Counter, Toss, Dive and Run Play stacked next to Play Action, Pass Play, Flat, Spot, Motion and Cover 3 Beater. You establish gap scheme runs from Strong I and I Form, then punish the run fit with Play Action off the same backfield look. Sample calls like FB Dive and 0 1 Trap live in the under center world, while Curls, Bench and Spot give you the quick game and Cover 3 Beater answers when the defense drops eight. Pistol adds 17 plays across 2 sets as a hybrid look where the back is still behind the quarterback but the read window is cleaner.

Choosing Sim Focusedtargeting Rn Offense over a Shotgun heavy book gets you clock control, a real Goal Line Offense package (9 plays in 1 set) and three Hail Mary plays including Goal Post for end of half situations. What you give up is the four and five wide spam that pure 10 and 11 personnel books offer. This is a playbook for a player who wants to win the personnel matchup pre-snap, force nickel defenses to defend FB Dive and Power, and take shots with play action once the safeties start creeping.

Scheme Fit

Sim Focusedtargeting Rn Offense wants a power back with high trucking and break tackle for the Power, Counter and Dive concepts, a true lead blocking fullback for the 23, 22 and 21 groupings, and at least two tight ends who can block in line and still release on Play Action. The quarterback does not need elite mobility given how little Pistol is in the book, but he does need play action rating and enough short accuracy to hit Flat, Spot and Curls on rhythm, and the offensive line should be built around run block power rather than pure pass protection. Pick this playbook if you enjoy winning with personnel and pre-snap motion, controlling the clock, and taking your shots off run action rather than spamming spread reads from Shotgun.

Strengths

  • Under center depth is the headline: Singleback, I Form and Strong I give you 112 plays across 11 sets, so you can run Power, Counter, Toss and Dive from three different backfield alignments and force the defense to re-fit gaps every snap instead of memorizing one look.
  • The 23, 22 and 21 personnel groupings let you put a fullback and multiple tight ends on the field, which pulls opponents out of nickel and dime and makes your Play Action shots off Strong I and I Form far more believable than the same concept from a 10 personnel spread book.
  • Motion is a listed concept and this book has the bodies to use it: shifting a fullback or tight end across the formation from Strong I or I Form reveals man versus zone before the snap, and the Flat and Spot concepts give you an immediate answer to whichever coverage the motion exposes.
  • Shotgun still carries 50 plays across 4 sets, so your audible package can flip from a heavy Strong I look to spread passing without leaving the playbook, and Cover 3 Beater concepts are there for the single high shells that show up after you commit to the run.
  • A full 9 play Goal Line Offense set plus two Hail Mary sets means the red zone and end of half situations are covered natively instead of forcing you into generic fallbacks.

Weaknesses

  • Only 10 personnel and 11 personnel represent true spread looks here, and with Shotgun capped at 4 sets there is no deep empty or five wide library, so trailing by multiple scores in the fourth quarter leaves you calling the same handful of Shotgun passes repeatedly.
  • Pistol is thin at 17 plays across 2 sets, which limits the RPO and zone read style tempo attack that players with mobile quarterbacks usually want as a change of pace.
  • The concept list is run and play action dominant, so once an opponent user blitzes and commits a safety down, you have Curls, Bench, Spot and Flat as your main dropback answers and little vertical variety to punish him.
  • Heavy under center usage means slower snap to throw timing, and opponents who run nano style pressure off the edge will get home before your seven step play action develops if you do not keep a back in to block.
  • Defenses that live in nickel and dime regardless of your personnel can effectively ignore your 23 and 22 groupings, neutralizing the personnel matchup advantage that most of this playbook is built on.

Usage Tips

Build your base audible package inside Strong I and I Form so Power, Counter, Dive and the matching Play Action all live one button away from each other, then call them on first and second down between the 20s to set up the fake.

Use Singleback (46 plays across 5 sets, the widest set spread in the book) as your second and medium package, where Curls, Bench and Spot give you quick game answers without announcing run personnel.

Save Shotgun for third and long and two minute situations only, and lean on the Cover 3 Beater tagged concepts when the defense shows one high after you have been grinding the ball on the ground.

Motion a tight end or fullback across from I Form or Strong I before every snap to read man versus zone, then hot route the back or tight end to the flat when the defender follows him across the formation.

Inside the five, go straight to the Goal Line Offense set and call FB Dive out of 23 personnel, and keep Goal Post from the Hail Mary sets bookmarked for the final snap of a half rather than trying to improvise from Shotgun.
