HB Dive out of Singleback U Off (12 personnel) is a straight downhill run play designed to hit the A-gap immediately off the snap. The diagram shows the HB taking a direct path north through the middle of the line with no misdirection or lateral stretch, relying on the interior offensive line and both TEs to create a vertical crease. This is a pure run play, not a play-action look or RPO, and the primary read is the playside A-gap first, bouncing to the B-gap only if the defensive line clogs the interior.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and look for the middle linebacker's depth since a shallow, aggressive MLB read will beat this play to the hole. Identify if the defense is in a run-fit front with both defensive tackles head up on the guards, which clogs the A-gap dive lane and forces the RB to bounce. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the middle who can shoot the gap on the snap, since this play has no lead blocker or misdirection to hold him. This concept struggles against gap-control fronts and blitzes sent right up the middle, but it beats defenses that overcommit to outside zone or stretch run fits with wider defensive end alignment. Green-dot defenders reading dive keys quickly will limit this to minimal gains, so mix in play-action from the same formation to keep linebackers honest.
Usage Tips
Call HB Dive on short yardage and goal line situations where a quick, decisive hit up the gut converts the down. Check the defensive front pre-snap and confirm the middle linebacker is not stacked directly over the playside A-gap, since a downhill MLB blitz can blow this up before the RB gets skinny. Pair this with Inside Zone Split and Wide Zone Wk in the same play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on one blocking scheme, then mix in HB Dive to punish a defense that starts widening out to respect zone runs. Use this against light boxes (six defenders or fewer) since heavy run support from an extra safety in the box negates the interior blocking advantage. Avoid audibling into this against overload fronts or bear fronts that stack extra bodies directly over the center and guards.
