PA Boot Slide is a play-action pass out of Singleback 12 personnel that uses run-fake action to hold linebackers before the QB rolls out on the naked boot. Both outside receivers run vertical breaking routes, one wheeling upfield off a hard break at roughly ten yards and the other stemming outside before turning back to the sideline, while the middle of the field runs a shallow drag underneath paired with a slide protection block that peels out on the crosser. This is a play-action man beater designed to exploit linebackers biting on the run fake, with the primary read progression going drag/slide first as the built-in check-down, then working outside to the breaking route away from the boot side, and finally to the deep vertical breaker if the play-action fully freezes the defense.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage with linebackers biting on run action is the ideal shell to attack, since the boot puts the QB on the move away from trailing defenders. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the backfield or sitting in the shallow drag lane, since that lurk threat can jump the underneath route and bait a bad throw. Zone coverage that keeps linebackers at depth and undisturbed by the run fake takes away the drag read and forces the QB into the tighter outside window. Edge blitzes or contain rushers crashing the boot side are the biggest threat to this play since there is no extra protection on the rollout, so a fast defensive end can force an early, inaccurate throw. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined deep defenders squeeze the vertical breaking routes and make the QB hold the ball longer, increasing sack or scramble risk on the rollout.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs like first or second and short-to-medium yardage so the run fake actually threatens the defense and linebackers bite harder.
Check the box count and safety depth pre-snap: if you see stacked run support or a safety creeping down, that is your green light since the boot will pull those defenders out of position.
Roll the QB away from the blitz side when you sense pressure, since the naked boot has no blocker help and needs a clean lane away from unblocked rushers.
Hot route the shallow drag into a spot route versus zone-heavy shells if linebackers are sitting flat, giving your QB an easier completion window underneath.
Pair this with Inside Zone Split or HB Dive earlier in a series to sell the run fake, then call PA Boot Slide once the defense starts crashing down on run keys.
