HB Stretch out of Singleback U Off (12 personnel) is an outside zone run play that sends the HB laterally toward the sideline before he presses the edge and picks a crease. The offensive line and TEs execute zone step blocks moving in unison toward the play side, reaching defenders and creating cutback lanes as the front flows. This is a pure run play designed to stretch the defense horizontally, not a play-action or RPO look. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is press the frontside edge first, then read the first zone blocker's block to decide between bouncing outside, hitting a mid cutback lane, or cutting all the way back against backside pursuit.
Pre-snap, identify linebacker depth and alignment, since stretch runs are most vulnerable to fast flowing, gap disciplined linebackers who can beat blockers to the edge. Watch for safety rotation toward the play side pre-snap, which signals run support and should trigger a check to a play-action or backside concept instead. Post-snap, user a linebacker or safety and key the backfield flow, then attack the frontside edge before the ball carrier can bounce outside. Zone blitzes and edge contain from a defensive end are the biggest counters to this play, since they force the HB to cut back into pursuit. If the defense is in a light box with man coverage on the perimeter, expect the stretch to hit for solid yardage since fewer defenders are available to flow to the edge.
Use HB Stretch on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short to medium) when you want to establish tempo and set up cutback runs later in the drive.
Pre-snap, check for light box counts and safeties rotated away from the play side, since stretch runs die against stacked fronts and fast flowing linebackers.
If the defense shows an overloaded front or a heavy blitz look, consider hotting the backside TE into a chip or audible to HB Dive to punish an aggressive interior.
Pair HB Stretch with PA Boot Slide or PA Flood later in a series once linebackers start flowing hard, since the run action will hold second level defenders and open up the boot or flood concept behind them.
Mix in Wide Zone Wk from the same set to keep the defense guessing between weak and strong zone stretch looks, forcing linebackers to stay honest on their run fits.
