Breakdown

Inside Zone Split lines up out of Singleback U Off with 12 personnel, showing two receivers split wide (one running a vertical go route up the numbers, the other running a corner breaking route from the boundary) while the offensive line and attached tight end execute zone blocking steps on the play side. The HB takes the zone handoff and reads his blocking surface, pressing the point of attack and cutting off the double team or backside cutback lane. This is a straightforward zone run play, not a play-action or RPO look, so the primary read progression belongs to the ball carrier: press the A gap or B gap bubble, then bounce outside off the edge defender's leverage if the interior gets clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth before the snap. Linebackers stacked tight to the line signal a run blitz that can beat inside zone if your offensive line does not get immediate movement. Identify the defensive end or outside linebacker's alignment on the play side edge, since a hard crash inside opens the bounce lane while outside contain forces a cutback. This play struggles against gap-exchange stunts and heavy run blitzes with an extra defender in the box, so expect a stacked front on early downs to shut it down. It beats light boxes out of nickel or dime packages where the defense sells out for pass coverage, since one-on-one blocks are easier for zone linemen to sustain. Track the safety rotation post-snap. If a safety is cheating down into the box pre-snap, the defense is likely selling out to stop the run and you should consider checking to a play-action concept instead.

Usage Tips

Run this out of base personnel on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to keep defenses honest against your play-action shots in this set like PA Flood or PA Boot Slide.

Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to Quick Slants or motioning a receiver to check the numbers before the snap.

Let the HB make one cut and go. Do not dance in the backfield, since zone blocking is designed for a single decisive cut into the widest running lane.

Pair this with HB Dive and HB Stretch to build a run-heavy sequence that forces linebackers to respect multiple gap threats, then hit them with PA Deep Cross once they start flowing hard to stop the run.

Use manual user control on a lead blocker or the backside tackle to seal an edge defender who is crashing down hard on zone action.
