Overview

The Ace Double Wing is the heaviest, most deceptive look in the Singleback formation. It uses 23 personnel (two backs, three tight ends, zero wide receivers). Most Singleback sets spread at least one receiver wide. This one condenses everything inside the numbers: tight ends are attached to the line and a wing sits just off each edge, with the HB alone at depth behind the QB. There are no split defenders to widen the defense, so every run fit and every coverage responsibility is compressed into the box. That forces defenses into goal line, 4-4, or 3-4 heavy personnel packages that are slow in space.

The set is tagged Gadget because it is built on misdirection rather than raw spacing. The wings create extra gaps and extra blockers at the point of attack, which powers HB Power O, HB Counter Wk, HB Smash, and Escort Duo. They also make the Fake HB Zone QB Bootlt, Fake HB Zone QB Boot Lt, PA Ctr Waggle, and Escort PA Sprint Rt looks nearly identical to the run plays pre-snap. Escort concepts send a wing in motion to lead block or leak out, and toss plays like Weak Toss and Escort Zone Toss punish defenders who crash inside to stop the downhill game.

The matchup edge comes from the tight ends. Heavy personnel pulls linebackers and safeties toward the line, which isolates your best receiving TE on a linebacker or a box safety in space. TE Corners, TE Shake, and PA TE Cross are built to exploit exactly that. PA HB Wheel isolates a back on a linebacker down the sideline once the defense has been conditioned to fill hard against the run.

Strengths

Every run concept has a mirrored play-action look (HB Zone Wk with Fake HB Zone QB Boot Lt, Wide Zone Lt with PA Boot Lt), so users who crash downhill on run reads get beaten over the top by leaking tight ends.
The two wings create an extra gap on each side, so HB Power O and HB Counter Wk regularly outnumber base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts at the point of attack, especially when the defense stays in nickel or dime personnel to match.
TE Corners and TE Shake are strong man beaters because heavy personnel draws linebackers and strong safeties into coverage on athletic tight ends, and the corner and shake breaks create easy separation against Cover 1 and Cover 0.
PA Ctr Waggle and Escort PA Sprint Rt flood one side against Cover 3 and Cover 4, putting the flat defender in a high/low bind while the QB rolls away from backside pressure.
The compressed alignment forces defenses to commit numbers to the box, which opens the perimeter for Weak Toss and Escort Zone Toss against defenders overpursuing inside.

Weaknesses

With no wide receivers, speed is limited on the outside, so defenses can play press man across the board and run a Cover 0 blitz without fearing a deep threat.
A user-controlled safety or linebacker sitting in the flat or the middle hook can blow up bootleg and waggle reads, since those concepts depend on the one defender who has to choose between run and pass.
Goal line and 5-2 heavy fronts with edge crash and a pinched line can clog the wings' gaps and blow up counter and power plays before the pullers arrive.
Simulated pressure or nano blitzes off the boot side put a free rusher in the QB's face on rollouts, and most bootlegs have limited hot route options once the fake is carried out.
The playbook is heavy in play-action and gadget concepts, so opponents who recognize the formation can sit in a heavy zone like Cover 3 Buzz and bait QBs into forcing throws to crossing tight ends.

Usage Tips

Establish HB Power O and HB Smash early, then check the linebacker and safety depth pre-snap. Once second-level defenders are creeping within five yards, call Fake HB Zone QB Bootlt or PA TE Cross off the same look.

On 3rd and short or goal line, spam HB Dive and Escort Duo against light boxes. If the defense brings goal line personnel, audible to Stick or TE Corners to attack the linebackers in coverage.

Against Cover 0 or aggressive man blitzes, hot route the playside wing to a block and use TE Shake or TE Corners with a quick drop to beat the pressure before it arrives.

Use Escort motions to diagnose coverage. If a defender travels with the motioning wing, it is man coverage, so check to PA HB Wheel or TE Corners. If the defense rotates without following, it is zone, so stick with PA Ctr Waggle or Escort PA Sprint Rt to flood.

Save Weak Toss and Escort Zone Toss for when opponents user the middle linebacker and shade their front strong. Flip the play to the weak side to hit the edge before contain can set.
