HB Counter Wk is a weakside power run out of Singleback Ace Double Wing with 23 personnel. The diagram shows the offensive line pulling the backside guard through to lead the halfback around the edge while the wing and tight ends kick out the edge defenders, creating a natural running lane once the counter action sets up misdirection. The HB takes a slight jab step opposite the play call before following his puller, and the primary read progression starts with the puller's block: bounce outside if the edge is sealed, or cut inside off the puller's hip if the alley is clogged. This is a pure run play with no route concept, designed to attack overaggressive run fits and gap integrity on the weakside.
Pre-snap, check for stacked box counts and safety depth. Light boxes with two high safeties are prime counter windows. Watch for a 3-technique or 4i-technique defensive tackle who can penetrate quickly and blow up the counter before the puller arrives. Post-snap, identify if the play side linebacker is reading gap-to-gap or biting on the initial flow, since disciplined backers who stay home kill this play. User-controlled defenders spying the backfield or crashing down hard on the guard pull can blow up the timing, so look to bounce outside if you see a fast defender diagnosing the counter step. This run beats aggressive man and zone fronts that overcommit to the initial flow, but struggles against disciplined 4-3 under fronts and defenses that stack the box with quick trigger linebackers.
Run this out of neutral personnel looks so the defense can't key run pre-snap off your formation tendencies.
Watch linebacker depth before the snap. If the backers are sitting tight to the line, this counter's misdirection will freeze them for a free run through the hole.
Use the jab step animation to sell the initial flow away from the play side, this manipulates user-controlled linebackers and safeties who are flowing hard to contain.
Pair this with Weak Toss and HB Zone Wk in the same set to build a run tendency, then hit them with PA Ctr Waggle or Fake HB Zone QB Boot Lt off the same look to punish overpursuit.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when you have play-action counters loaded up behind it, and avoid it against fast-flow 3-4 fronts that crash gaps quickly.
