Defensive Reads

Identify if the Mike linebacker is reading the fullback or wing lead blocker, because a Mike who flows too fast with the zone action leaves a gap for a quick handoff read. Check safety depth before the snap, since a single high safety cheating toward the play side strength can be exploited on the cutback or with the play-action boot off this same look. This run struggles against gap exchange fronts and disciplined edge defenders who stay home on contain, especially in cover 3 or cover 1 with linebackers who read run keys instead of biting on the zone flow. Watch for a user-controlled defender flowing to the play side pre-snap, since that often signals a run blitz or edge crash that can be countered by cutting the run backside.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap to check if the defense is stacking the box with 7 or more defenders, since this heavy personnel invites run blitzes and stacked fronts. If you see a single high safety with linebackers crashed downhill, hot route the fullback or extra wing to chip and release into the flow to add another blocker on the edge. This play works best on early downs like first and ten or second and short when you want to establish tempo and set up play-action off the same look. Pair this with Fake HB Zone QB Boot Lt or PA Boot Lt from the same set to punish linebackers who key hard on the zone flow and vacate their pass responsibilities. Against odd fronts with a nose bubble, stick with the interior read rather than forcing the bounce, since the double wing blocking gives extra beef to control three technique and shade defenders inside.
