Breakdown

Weak Toss out of Singleback Ace Double Wing is a pure run play that tosses the ball to the HB heading to the weak side of the formation, away from the double wing tight end alignment. The diagram shows the HB taking a lateral path outside the tackle box, relying on the offensive line to reach block and seal the edge while the frontside wing and tackle climb to the second level. This is a perimeter run designed to get the ball to the edge quickly, and the primary read is the frontside alignment: HB reads the flow of the edge defender and puckers inside if the alley is filled, or bounces outside if the corner and safety are outflanked.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a fast flowing weak side linebacker, if he reads toss quickly and beats the pulling blocker to the edge this play stalls. Identify if the defense is in a run blitz look with the safety crashing down pre-snap, that alignment can blow up the edge before the HB turns the corner. Check cornerback press versus soft alignment on the weak side, a press corner who squeezes hard forces the HB to cut back inside. Look for the defensive end crashing hard down the line instead of setting the edge, a strong edge set from the end forces a negative play. Zone shells with the safety rotating away from the toss side tend to leave the alley light, that is the green light for the HB to get outside.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box against 23 personnel this run gets tougher to spring outside.

Look at the weak side cornerback and safety depth, if they are playing deep and not filling the alley aggressively this toss hits big.

Use pre-snap motion or a shift to identify if the defense is rotating to the weak side, if they flow hard that direction call something else from the menu.

Pair this with HB Counter Wk and HB Zone Wk in the same set to keep linebackers guessing on frontside versus backside run direction.

Best called on early downs in normal or heavy run personnel situations where the defense expects base run fits rather than an edge toss.

Hot route the double wing to a quick chip or seal block if you anticipate an overload blitz off the edge.
