The two inside receivers work vertical stick routes off the line, sitting down in the intermediate zone against soft coverage or working as quick option routes against man. This is a classic zone beater built on horizontal stretch principles, with the primary read going to the shorter vertical stick route first, then working outside to the wide breaking route if the underneath defender widens with it.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flow of the inside linebackers at the snap, if they widen to cover the stick routes it opens up cutback lanes underneath for a scramble drill throw. Zone shells like Cover 3 and Cover 2 struggle to cover both the stick sit route and the wide breaking route at the same time, so identify which underneath defender is responsible for the seam. Man coverage with a single high safety can be tough on this concept since the wide breaking routes take time to separate, so key the corner leverage before the snap. If you see a user controlled defender sitting in a lurk position over the middle, avoid the inside stick route entirely and go straight to the outside breaking routes. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers signal man or blitz while deeper drops signal zone, which tells you whether to attack the stick route or the sideline breakers.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check for two high safeties since this concept punishes Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells that leave the stick route open in the seam window.
Hot route the outside wide breaking routes into quicker slants or comeback routes if you see man coverage press at the line, since the natural width of those routes takes too long to develop against tight man.
Use this on early down and medium distance to stay ahead of the sticks, since the stick route sits down right around the first down marker against zone drops.
Pair Stick with HB Zone Wk or HB Dive from the same Ace Double Wing look to keep linebackers honest, then come back to Stick once they start cheating up on run fits.
If the defense shows blitz pre-snap, get the ball out fast to the inside stick route since it is the quickest developing throw and beats most nano blitz packages before the rush arrives.
