PA Ctr Waggle is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Ace Double Wing that sells inside zone action before the QB rolls right on the waggle. Off the fake, the two outside receivers push vertical seams up the sideline while the TE runs a delayed drag across the middle into the flat where the QB is rolling, and the HB releases into a short flat route underneath as a checkdown. The primary read progression starts with the TE drag working left to right as the QB rolls, then the HB flat route, with the vertical seams as the home run shot if a safety bites hard on the run fake, making this a solid man beater against aggressive run support and a zone beater on hard flow to one side.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers staying home instead of flowing with the run fake, that is your first indicator the defense is playing PA Ctr Waggle honest and the underneath routes will be covered. Man coverage on the TE (especially a linebacker matched up) gets exposed by the drag route working across the field into open grass. Cover 3 with a hard flowing strong safety to the run side can jump the TE drag, so be ready to reset to the HB flat or push the seam route if that happens. Edge pressure or a contain defender staying disciplined on the QB rollout side is the biggest killer of this play, since it collapses the pocket before routes develop. Blitzes with extra rushers crashing down on the fake center run can leave the backside seam wide open since defenders overcommit to the box.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when the defense has shown run blitz or heavy box counts on film to maximize the play fake.
Check the safety depth pre-snap: if both safeties are within 8 yards showing run support, the vertical seam routes have big play potential once the QB rolls.
Use the TE drag as your first read since it crosses the field into the direction of the rollout and is easy to hit on the move.
Pair this with HB Power O or HB Dive from the same set earlier in a series so the run action actually holds linebackers and forces them to respect the fake.
If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone drops, hot route the HB flat route to a quick out or throw it early before the edge defender can wall off the rollout lane.
