The HB takes a direct handoff and hits the A gap immediately behind the interior double team, relying on the center and guards to win their one-on-ones up front. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is simple: identify which A gap opens first based on the defensive tackle alignment and get skinny through it before the linebackers fill.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a heavy box with linebackers creeping to the line pre-snap, which signals a run blitz designed to blow up the dive before it develops. Key the defensive tackle alignment: a 1-technique or 3-technique shaded away from the play side often means a cleaner interior lane. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the A gap since a smart human defender will sit on dive reads out of heavy personnel. Check safety depth, a single high safety crashing down fast suggests the defense is loading the box to stop inside runs. If the linebackers are reading run and flowing hard to the mesh point immediately after the snap, expect this play to get stuffed and lean on outside runs or play-action from this set instead.
Usage Tips
Use HB Dive on short yardage and goal line situations where you need a quick, low risk gain against light boxes. Check the defensive line spacing pre-snap: if both defensive tackles are shaded wide, the A gap should be wide open for an explosive cutback. Pair this play with HB Power O and HB Counter Wk from the same set so the front has to respect multiple gap schemes off similar formation looks. Avoid calling this into stacked eight man fronts or heavy blitz packages since there is no RPO element to punish extra defenders. Use manual cutback control with the analog stick right after the handoff to react to linebacker flow instead of committing to a predetermined lane.
