Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are stacked tight behind the double wing alignment they are likely keying run and will fill fast, so consider audibling to a play-action shot instead. Identify whether the defense is running a 4-3 under front or an odd front with a nose bubbled over center, since gap-sound fronts with disciplined edge defenders tend to shut this concept down. Look for safety rotation into the box pre-snap, an eighth man in the box on this personnel usually signals a run blitz or crashing edge designed to beat zone schemes. Post-snap, key the backside defensive end and any user-controlled defender flowing hard to the weak side, if they overpursue the cutback lane opens up for a big gain. This play struggles against gap control schemes with disciplined linebackers who stay square and read their keys instead of shooting gaps aggressively.
Usage Tips
Run this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay unpredictable and set up your play-action shots later in the set. Check the box count pre-snap and only commit to this concept if you have a numbers advantage on the weak side, since stacked fronts with an extra defender in the box can blow this up before the HB gets to the line. Use the wing and fullback as your eyes for the cutback lane, if the playside double team gets movement stay patient, but if defenders are winning inside hot route the HB to bounce it outside immediately.
