Wing Tight Left is a heavy singleback set built on 13 personnel: one back, three tight ends, one wide receiver. Unlike the spread out singleback sets that stretch a defense horizontally, this alignment stacks bodies to the left with a tight end on the line and a second tight end in the wing position just outside and behind him, creating a naturally condensed edge. The third tight end aligns to the opposite side, and the lone receiver splits wide, which means you get a true single receiver isolation on the backside every single snap while the defense has to commit numbers to the wing side.
The wing alignment is the whole point. That extra body off the line gives you an immediate edge blocker for gap runs, and it also lets you release him into flat routes and drag concepts without giving the defense a clean read on run or pass. HB Power and Duo attack downhill behind the extra surface, while Wide Zone and Inside Zone use the wing to seal the backside cutback lane. Because defenses load the box against 13 personnel, the play action menu here (PA Scissors, PA Boot Slide, PA Sprint HB Flat) becomes brutal against aggressive users who bite on the run action.
The gadget layer separates Wing Tight Left from standard heavy sets. Jet Sweep Wk, PA Jet Sweep, and Zone Fake Jet Wk all put pre-snap motion into the picture, which forces the defense to either rotate coverage or leave the perimeter uncovered. That motion also tells you a ton pre-snap: if a defender chases the jet man across the formation, you are looking at man coverage and your isolated backside receiver just became your best matchup.
Establish HB Power and Duo early so the play action menu carries weight later. Once a user starts jumping the run fit, PA Sprint HB Flat and PA Boot Slide get you free rollout throws outside the pressure.
Motion the jet man pre-snap on any play, not just the jet concepts. It is your fastest man versus zone tell, and it forces the defense to rotate before you snap.
Use this set in short yardage and second and medium, plus goal line and clock killing situations where 13 personnel forces heavy defensive substitutions.
Hot route the wing tight end to a flat or drag when you see single high. That release gets him behind the curl to flat defender and gives you an easy first down conversion off Stick.
Check to Wide Zone against loaded interior fronts and Inside Zone or HB Dive against wide alignments. The wing seals the backside on Wide Zone, which makes the cutback lane live when the linebackers overflow.
