Inside Zone out of Singleback Wing Tight Left is a pure zone run play with the HB taking a downhill track behind zone steps from the offensive line. The diagram shows the full line flowing laterally to create a wall before the back presses the gap, with no route concept drawn since every eligible receiver is blocking or not shown running a pattern. This is a zone beater run play designed to attack light boxes, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is backside cutback to frontside bounce, reading the double team at the point of attack first before working to the second level.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check safety depth, a single high safety with a light box means this play has a favorable angle. Watch the Mike linebacker's alignment, if he is stacked behind the center he can fill the cutback lane quickly so plan to bounce it outside. Post-snap, key the defensive tackle's gap shade, if he squeezes down hard the cutback lane opens for the ball carrier. User-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side create the backside cutback lane, watch for that user aggression and hit it back inside. This run struggles against overloaded fronts and gap-plug blitz packages where extra defenders crash downhill before the double team can climb to the second level.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for a clean numbers advantage.
Use the strong safety and Mike linebacker depth as your cutback key, if they sit at depth stay patient and trust the zone flow instead of forcing a bounce.
Pair this with Duo and HB Power from the same set so linebackers cannot key run direction off your formation tendencies.
Mix in PA Boot Slide or PA Sprint HB Flat after two or three Inside Zone reps to punish linebackers who start crashing downhill on run fakes.
Best called on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when you want to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play-action off the same look.
