Jet Sweep Wk is a pure run play out of Singleback Wing Tight Left that puts the H-back in motion toward the weak side before the snap, handing the ball off on the fly for outside speed to the edge. The line and wing execute a lateral flow blocking scheme, sealing the edge and pulling defenders inside while the ball carrier stretches the play horizontally around the weak side. This is a gap-speed run play designed to beat slow-flowing linebackers and overly aggressive zone defenses that fail to respect jet motion, with the primary read being the edge: get skinny if the alley is cut off or bend it upfield once you clear the first level of blockers.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, key the weak side cornerback and any overhang defender or SAM linebacker alignment since a wide, aggressive edge player can blow this play up before it develops. Watch for defenses that spy or key the jet motion with a linebacker sliding early, that is a sign the coordinator has a designed run fit against motion and will disrupt the outside lane. This run gets stopped cold by fast-flow zone defenses with disciplined edge containment, especially 46 Bear or heavy fronts that fill gaps and refuse to bite on the motion. Post-snap, if the defensive line stays home rather than chasing the flow, the cutback lane inside will be tight, so the runner needs to accelerate through the alley immediately rather than hesitate. User-controlled linebackers who fly downhill on jet motion snaps are the biggest threat, so mix in play-action counters like PA Jet Sweep or Zone Fake Jet Wk to keep them honest.
Usage Tips
Snap the ball right as the jet motion crosses the backfield to maximize the head start on outside linebackers and force them to declare their run fit late.
Use this against defenses that show single-high safety shells or aggressive fronts that crash down on inside runs, since the edge speed exploits overpursuit.
Pair this with HB Dive and Inside Zone from the same Wing Tight Left set so defenders start cheating inside, then hit them with Jet Sweep Wk to punish that tendency.
Call this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you want a low risk gain and to set up run-pass conflict for PA Jet Sweep later in the drive.
If the defense shows a hard edge-set corner or an overhang defender crashing fast, consider audibling to Wide Zone or Duo instead since the sweep lane will be clogged.
