HB Dive out of Singleback Wing Tight Left sends the HB straight downhill through the A-gap behind the center and guards, with the offensive line executing a standard down block scheme to seal interior gaps. This is a base run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, designed to punish light boxes and attack the middle of the defense before linebackers can flow. The primary read progression is one-cut: the HB reads the initial double team or down block at the point of attack, then presses the hole and cuts off whichever gap opens based on linebacker fill.
Defensive Reads
Watch box count before the snap: six or fewer defenders in the box means dive should hit for positive yardage almost every time. Key the middle linebacker depth, if he is playing downhill at five yards or closer he can beat the play to the point of attack and blow it up. Identify whether the defense is in a run-fit front like 4-3 Under or 46 Bear, both of which stack extra bodies inside and shut down interior dive runs. Watch for user-controlled defenders spying the A-gap or crashing down linebackers on a delayed blitz timing, since a quick user swat can end this play before the cut. Look for single-high safety shells that commit an extra defender to the run fit versus two-high shells that often leave lighter boxes and better cutback lanes for the HB.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and only run this into fronts with fewer than seven defenders in the box since dive is a numbers-driven play.
Use this against aggressive linebackers who are flowing hard to outside runs like Jet Sweep Wk or Wide Zone from this same set, since dive punishes overcommitted flow with a quick interior hit.
Pair HB Dive with Inside Zone and Duo in your play-calling sequence to keep linebackers guessing between one-cut downhill runs and zone stretch reads.
Call this on early downs, especially first and second and short, to stay ahead of the chains and set up PA Boot Slide or PA Sprint HB Flat off the same look.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz pre-snap, consider hot routing the fullback or using this as a check against six-man boxes since the quick handoff gets the ball out before backside pressure arrives.
