Breakdown

Stick out of Singleback Wing Tight Left is a quick game pass concept built to attack the flat, hook, and outside vertical zones simultaneously. From the diagram, both outside receivers run vertical stretch routes up the sidelines to hold the corners deep, the slot receiver (yellow arrow) runs a quick out or curl into the flat area, and the inline tight end (red arrow) sits in the hook zone as the classic stick route while the fullback or H-back (blue) works a wheel or drag route underneath from the backfield. This is a rhythm based zone beater designed to give the quarterback a fast three level read to the trips or wing side, with the primary progression starting on the stick/hook route, then working out to the flat, and finally coming back to the wheel route as a checkdown against soft coverage.

Defensive Reads

Key the middle linebacker at the snap since his drop depth tells you whether the hook zone is occupied for the stick route. Watch the flat defender's leverage pre-snap: if the corner or slot defender is playing over the top, the flat route will be open underneath immediately. This concept beats Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone shells hard because it stresses the flat to hook seam that those coverages leave vacant. Man coverage with a strong underneath lurk defender can shut this down quickly, so watch for a linebacker sitting in the throwing lane to the stick route. Post-snap, track any user controlled defender flying to the flat since that is the first route the quarterback typically progresses to and the easiest to jump.

Usage Tips

Get to the snap quickly and read the flat defender pre-snap to determine if you are facing a hard corner or a squatting linebacker in the flat zone.

Against man coverage, hot route the outside vertical routes into slants or hitches since the stick concept naturally clears out man defenders trailing underneath.

Use this play on third and short to third and medium since the stick and flat combo gives you a high percentage completion window against both Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells.

Pair this play with PA Sprint HB Flat or PA Boot Slide out of the same formation to sell the same backfield action and keep linebackers honest on run fits.

If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap, check to Duo or Inside Zone from this same personnel group to punish overaggressive fronts.
