Breakdown

PA Jet Sweep out of Singleback Wing Tight Left sells the jet sweep fake across the formation before working into a play-action passing concept. Off the run fake, the backside receiver runs a deep corner/go route up the numbers, the frontside receiver breaks on a shallow crossing route underneath, and a shorter drag or flat route works from the opposite side to give the quarterback a checkdown against blitzes. This is a play-action shot play designed to punish run-fit overreactions from linebackers and safeties, with the primary read progression going from the deep corner route to the shallow drag underneath, and the flat route as the last resort outlet.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone based on cornerback depth and leverage on the outside receivers running the corner and crossing routes. Watch linebacker depth and alignment before the snap. Linebackers sitting close to the line or shifted toward the jet motion side are a strong indicator of a run blitz, which opens up the play-action shot on the corner route. Post snap, key the safety rotation. A single high safety staying deep middle means the corner route is live down the sideline, while two safeties rotating over the top signals you should work the shallow crossing route instead. Beware of user linebackers spying the run fake and sitting in the shallow crossing route lane, since they can jump the underdneath read if you stare it down. This concept struggles against disciplined Cover 3 sink zones with a hard-flowing linebacker who stays home on run action, so have a checkdown plan ready if the shallow window closes.

Usage Tips

Run this early in a series after you have shown the actual Jet Sweep or Jet Sweep Wk run play so linebackers and safeties start cheating downhill on run flow.

Check the safety alignment before the snap. If you see a single high safety or the defense showing run blitz off the jet motion, take a shot on the deep corner route immediately after the play fake.

If the corner route is bracketed or the defense rotates to a two high shell post snap, work the shallow crossing route as your primary man beater against man coverage since it creates natural separation off the pick action near the line.

Use the flat/drag route as your answer versus zone blitzes and overload pressure, since it clears out quickly and gives you a hot throw before the pocket collapses.

Pair this play with HB Dive, HB Power, and Wide Zone in the same set to keep linebackers honest, then call PA Jet Sweep on early downs like first and ten or second and medium once you have established the run threat.
