DBL Outs is a two-man out breaking concept out of I Form Y Off Close, built to attack the sideline in the short to intermediate zones. Off the diagram, the two outside receivers push vertical then break hard toward the sideline on out routes, one from the boundary at a shallow depth and one from the slot at a deeper level, creating a natural high-low stagger on the same side of the field. The backside receiver runs a deep dig or crossing route to hold the far safety, while the running back releases into a flat route underneath as a checkdown or hot beater against blitz. Primary read progression starts with the deeper out route, works down to the shorter out if the corner sits, and finishes with the flat route as the outlet.
Watch the flat defender and cornerback depth before the snap, if the corner is playing tight man with no safety help over the top this concept can get picked off since the out breaks are hard breaking cuts that a good user defender can jump. Key the safety rotation after the snap, if you see a single high safety rotating hard to one side that usually signals man coverage or a Cover 3 buzz, which opens the deeper out route against a trailing corner. Против zone shells, identify the flat defender and hook defender leverage, if the flat defender sinks too deep the shorter out route sits in the open window right at the sticks. Blitz-heavy defenses will try to disrupt the timing of the outs before the receiver breaks, so a quick jump on the snap count and getting the ball out on rhythm is critical against nano blitz packages. If the defense shows Cover 2 with the corners squatting on any out breaking route, expect the sideline throw to get contested, in that case reset to the flat route or the backside dig as the safer option.
Pre-snap, identify if the corners are playing off man or sitting in a zone shell since this concept lives on beating both if the timing is right. Look for two high safeties before the snap, if the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 the stacked out routes will settle into the natural void between the corner and safety, so throw with anticipation right off the break. Hot route the running back to a quick flat or check release when facing pressure looks, this gives you a built in answer versus nano blitzes off the edge. Use this play on second and medium or third and short to medium since the out routes threaten the sticks without requiring a deep developing shot. Pair this with Double Dig or PA X Deep Out from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick out breaking timing throws and deeper dig or out combinations, this forces linebackers and safeties to hesitate on their zone drops.
