HB Iso is a straight downhill power run out of the I Form Y Off Close set with 21 personnel on the field. The fullback leads through the hole to isolate and pick off the first defender showing in the box, usually a linebacker, while the offensive line executes down blocks and combo blocks to seal the interior gaps. This is a pure run play with no route concept or play-action tag attached, so the primary read is the fullback lead blocker: follow his track, hit the crease he opens, and be ready to bounce outside if the alley is clogged by an extra man in the box.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the middle linebacker's depth and alignment since he is the primary target for your fullback's lead block and dictates which side the crease opens. Watch for a heavy box with safeties creeping down near the line of scrimmage, that signals run support and can shut down this play unless you counter with a play-action shot later. This play struggles against nano blitzes and gap-shooting defensive tackles that get penetration before the fullback can square up his block, so respect A gap pressure looks and be ready to bounce it outside. It beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that play read and react linebackers, since the lead blocker neutralizes the first defender to trigger downhill. Look for user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side pre-contact, as a patient cutback against overaggressive pursuit can turn this into a big gain when the backside cutback lane stays clean.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short when you need to establish tempo and keep the defense honest against your pass sets out of I Form. Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has stacked eight or nine defenders inside the tackles, consider audibling to HB Zone Toss or HB Stretch to get to the edge instead of banging it up the middle. Use your fullback as the lead blocker cue and let your user-controlled HB press the hole then explode through the crease rather than dancing behind the line. Pair HB Iso with HB Counter Wk in your play-calling sequence so linebackers that fly downhill on iso action get gashed by the counter's misdirection later in the drive. Against aggressive defenses that crash the A gaps every snap, mix in Mtn Counter Solid or Mtn PA Counter from the same set to keep second level defenders honest and slow down their pursuit angles.
