Breakdown

SFT Mtn Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of I Form Y Off Close with a pre-snap shift/motion that brings the fullback across to adjust the mountain blocking surface before the snap. The offensive line and TE work zone steps together, sealing the interior for the HB to press the mesh point and read the first double team combo block off the ball. This is a run play designed to beat over-aggressive fronts and gap-shooting linebackers, with the primary read progression starting inside at the double team then bouncing to the weak side alley if the backside linebacker flows too hard.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense shifts with the mountain motion, since a defense that stays gap sound and does not overreact to motion is much tougher to zone out. Key the play side linebacker depth, if he is sitting shallow and square he is reading run fits well and will not bite on the zone flow. Watch for a Mike linebacker or user defender flowing hard downhill immediately at the snap, which opens the backside cutback lane for the HB. Look for a 3-4 front with edge defenders staying disciplined, since that keeps the zone contained and forces the back into traffic. If the defense stacks the box with 8 defenders and shows no respect for play-action, this run play becomes low value and should be replaced with a PA shot from the same set.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap shift to bait linebackers into flowing toward the strength before the ball is snapped, since the mountain motion shifts blocking angles at the last second.

Run this on early downs against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts where linebackers are stacked tight to the box and susceptible to zone flow misdirection.

If the defense shows a heavy overload to the play side, hot route the fullback to insert weak side instead of climbing to the second level.

Pair this with Mtn Counter Solid and Mtn PA Counter from the same set so linebackers respect both zone flow and counter action off identical motion.

Avoid calling this against nickel or dime sub packages with light boxes, since the lack of extra blockers makes it easier for defenses to outnumber the zone scheme.
