Y Off Close takes the standard I Form skeleton (quarterback under center, fullback stacked in front of the halfback) and pulls the tight end off the line into a wing alignment tight to the formation, with both receivers condensed near the numbers. That compression is the whole point: instead of the wide splits you get from I Form Pro or the balanced hard-attached tight end in I Form Tight, you get a run-heavy shell with an off-ball Y who can be motioned, flexed, or released clean into the second level without fighting through a defensive end. The 21 personnel package (2 RB, 1 TE) forces the defense into base or heavy nickel looks, and against base personnel your slot-capable tight end and inside receiver are working against linebackers and strong safeties rather than dedicated coverage corners.
The run game is where this set earns its snaps. HB Iso, HB Counter Wk, HB Stretch, HB Zone Toss, Zone Wk, Mtn Counter Solid, and SFT Mtn Counter F give you gap, zone, and toss concepts out of the same look, with the fullback as an actual lead blocker instead of a decoy. The off-ball Y adds an extra puller and kick-out blocker on the counter family, which is why the Power HB tag applies here: you can hammer the same downhill concept from multiple angles and let the defense guess the point of attack. Because the alignment is condensed, your run fits look nearly identical pre-snap, so a user reading run keys has very little to work with until the mesh point.
The pass game is built as a play-action extension of those runs. PA Deep Read, Mtn PA Counter, PA X Deep Out, PA Pylon Sail, SFT PA WR Options, SFT PA Double Cross, and SFT Mtn PA Flood all sell run first, freeze the linebackers, and attack the intermediate and deep sideline where compressed splits create natural leverage. Because your receivers start inside the numbers, out-breaking routes like DBL Outs, PA X Deep Out, and PA Pylon Sail have the full field to work into, and Double Dig plus SFT Mtn Zone Wk give you inside-breaking answers when the defense squats on the boundary. Add the Gadget and 3DRB tags and this set doubles as a change-of-pace look where you can put a receiving back in the fullback slot and run mismatch route combos against linebackers who cannot cover.
Establish the run first: run HB Iso and HB Stretch on first and second down to force the safety down, then punish it with PA Deep Read or PA Pylon Sail when you see single-high with a crashing box.
Read the tight end side pre-snap. If the defense stacks the box to the wing, run HB Counter Wk or SFT Mtn Counter F away from the strength; if they overshift, hit Mtn Counter Solid back into the weak edge.
Against Cover 3, lean on DBL Outs and PA X Deep Out to attack the sideline void under the corner, then switch to Double Dig or SFT Mtn Zone Wk once the user starts sitting on the boundary.
Against man coverage, motion the tight end or hot route the fullback to a flat or angle route. SFT PA WR Options and SFT Mtn PA Sprint HB Flat become high-percentage man beaters when a linebacker has to run with a receiving back.
Use this set in short yardage, four-minute offense, and red zone situations. HB Zone Toss and Zone Wk get the ball to the perimeter with a lead blocker, and Mtn Flood gives you a three-level answer if the defense sells out to stop the run.
