Slot Close

Overview

Slot Close takes the standard I Form skeleton (fullback stacked in front of the halfback, quarterback under center) and pulls the second receiver down into a tight slot alignment next to the tight end, creating a compressed strong side with the X isolated to the weak side. Where I Form Tight Pair or I Form Twin TE lean almost entirely on downhill run blocking and short-area play action, Slot Close keeps the 21 personnel run threat intact while opening up jet motion and gadget looks that are usually reserved for gun sets. The slot receiver is your motion man, and because he starts inside the numbers, jet sweeps and fake jet handoffs hit the edge faster than they do from a spread alignment.

Strengths

  • Jet Sweep and PA Jet Sweep off the same alignment force the defense to declare edge support pre-snap, and the motion itself tells you man or zone before the ball is even snapped
  • HB Stretch, HB Blast, and HB Lead Dive give you three distinct run tracks (outside, off-tackle power, and interior) from identical personnel, so your run game does not tip direction
  • Spacing and PA Spot are legitimate zone beaters that flood the intermediate hooks, and the compressed slot alignment shortens the throw window against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells
  • PA Shot Post and PA Switch Dig punish aggressive run committers, with the isolated X receiver getting a one on one release against whatever corner is left on an island
  • 94 Will and Zone Fake Jet keep the linebackers honest on second level flow, setting up the play action shots later in the drive

Weaknesses

  • Heavy 21 personnel invites base defense with extra bodies in the box, so interior nano blitzes and A gap pressure collapse the pocket before the deeper play action routes develop
  • Play action concepts (PA Jet Sweep, PA Sprint HB Flat, PA Shot Post, PA Switch Dig) all carry that built in animation delay, which is fatal against a user who reads the run fake and sends edge heat
  • The compressed slot alignment lets defenses press and reroute both strong side receivers with one adjustment, killing timing on Spacing and PA Spot
  • Only three true receiving threats plus backs means user-controlled defenders can sit on the isolated X and take away your best man beater
  • Jet motion tendencies get read quickly online, and repeat jet looks let opponents pre-set flat coverage or shade a defender to the motion side

Usage Tips

Motion the slot receiver before every snap regardless of the concept: if a defender travels with him you have man coverage and can go to your PA Switch Dig or the isolated X, and if nobody follows you are reading zone and should work Spacing or PA Spot

Use HB Blast and HB Lead Dive in short yardage and goal line, then run the exact same look with PA Sprint HB Flat once the linebackers start crashing downhill

On second and medium, HB Stretch out of Slot Close stresses the edge and forces the defense to widen, which opens the interior gaps for Blast on the next snap

Hot route the fullback to a flat or angle route when you see A gap pressure, giving you a quick checkdown that beats the nano before the play action fake finishes

Save PA Shot Post for after you have established the run and the jet motion, ideally on first down when the safeties have crept toward the box
