Jet Sweep out of I Form Slot Close motions the slot receiver across the formation pre-snap at full speed to receive the handoff at the mesh point. The offensive line executes a lateral sweep blocking scheme, with linemen flowing to the perimeter to seal the edge and spring the ball carrier outside. This is a pure run play designed to attack the edge with pre-snap motion misdirection, and the primary read progression is to identify the edge defender and safety flow before deciding whether to bounce outside or cut it up through a natural crease if the perimeter blockers get width and a hat on the force defender.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense shifts a linebacker or safety over the top of the jet motion, this tells you if they are respecting the sweep with numbers. Watch the edge defender's alignment, if he is crashing inside on run fits rather than staying wide, the sweep has a clean lane to the boundary. Post-snap, key the flow of the second level linebackers, if they overrun the play chasing the initial motion, a cutback lane can open up behind the sweep blocking. This play struggles against disciplined force defenders and defensive ends who maintain contain instead of crashing down inside on the down block action. Watch for user-controlled defenders spying the backfield, a good user player can key the jet sweep quickly and close the edge before the blocking wall forms, so mixing in play-action off this look keeps them honest.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion pre-snap to force the defense to declare their run fits, if a linebacker or safety flows hard with the motion man before the snap you know you are getting extra numbers to that side and should consider checking the play or leaning the other direction with a hot route.
This play hits fastest against defenses that do not have an edge defender staying home, so look for aggressive blitz shows or one high safety looks that leave the perimeter light.
Pair Jet Sweep with PA Jet Sweep and Zone Fake Jet from the same set so the defense has to respect the outside motion every single snap, this sets up explosive play-action shots off the same look later in the drive.
Best called on early downs or short yardage situations where the defense may be in a run stuffing front but overcommitting inside, since the sweep hits the perimeter before interior defenders can rally.
Against user defenders spying the motion man, delay your snap timing slightly so the jet motion crosses the formation right at the snap to minimize time for the defense to adjust their leverage.
