Spacing out of I Form Slot Close (21 personnel) is a classic horizontal stretch route concept built to attack zone coverage, particularly Cover 3 and Cover 4. The diagram shows a stagger of quick outs and hitches from left to right: a receiver cutting outside near the sideline, a shallow drag or spot route sitting underneath from the slot, an out breaking receiver at the numbers, and a TE releasing vertical before bending into an out at the boundary. The RB stays in to help protect while the QB works a quick horizontal progression from the flat to the sideline read, getting the ball out fast against soft zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Cover 3 is the classic soft spot for this concept since the flat defender has to choose between the out and the drag, creating a natural window if the QB reads it fast. Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if the underneath zone linebackers are sitting shallow they can jump the drag route and disrupt the low read. Cover 4 with soft corners is exploitable since the outs settle in front of the cushion, but be wary of user controlled corners jumping the sideline break. Man coverage with a hard flat defender or a nano blitz look can shut this down quickly since the routes are shallow and lack separation against tight man technique. Watch for a lurking linebacker sitting in the shallow zone, if the user pulls a defender underneath to sit on the drag or spot route, look immediately to the deeper out route on the opposite side.

Usage Tips

Fire this play quickly on early downs or third and short since every route breaks within a few yards of the line of scrimmage. Read the flat defender and underneath zone defenders before the snap, if the corner is sitting deep and the linebacker is shallow, throw the quick out to the boundary receiver immediately. Use the drag route as your check down against blitz looks since it clears out fast and gives the QB a safety valve versus pressure. Pair this call with PA Spot or PA Sprint HB Flat from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and play action shots off similar formation looks. Avoid throwing into the flat if you see a defender sitting at the same depth, since Cover 3 sink defenders will jump the route if the QB stares it down.
