PA Spot out of I Form Slot Close (21 personnel) opens with a play-action fake to sell the run before the quarterback works a classic Spot concept to the play side. The tight end runs a short drag/spot route underneath, the outside receiver on that side clears vertically on a deep corner/go route to stretch the cornerback, and the backside receiver runs a deep crossing route to the opposite sideline as an outlet against zone rotation. This is a play-action, Cover 3 beater built to attack the flat-to-curl defender with the underneath spot route while the corner route occupies the deep third, and the primary read progression starts with the spot route underneath, works to the deep corner route if a defender bites on the play-action, and finishes with the backside crosser as the last resort against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Read the strong safety depth at the snap. If he sits shallow to defend the run fake, the spot route window opens immediately underneath him. Watch the flat defender's reaction to the vertical corner route. If he bails deep to cover it, the spot route sits wide open in the vacated area. Identify Cover 3 by the single high safety and three deep defenders rotating post-snap. This coverage struggles to defend the deep corner route stretching the boundary corner. Beware Cover 4 or Cover 2 Man looks where the corner sits on the vertical route and a linebacker spies the tight end coming out of the backfield fake, since that removes the spot route's soft spot. Key the defensive line's reaction to the play-action fake. A disciplined edge defender staying home instead of crashing down can disrupt the quarterback's launch point and collapse the pocket before the deep routes develop.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you have already established the run game from Slot Close, since the play-action fake needs defenders biting downhill to open throwing lanes.
Check pre-snap for two deep safeties versus one high safety. Against a single high safety, expect Cover 3 and trust the spot route to sit in the hole created by the flat defender running with the vertical route.
If the cornerback shows hard outside leverage or the safety cheats toward the corner route, hot route the tight end's spot route into a quicker option or check down immediately since the window will close fast against aggressive zone drops.
Pair this play with HB Stretch or HB Blast earlier in the drive to get linebackers flowing downhill, then call PA Spot to freeze them with the fake and hit the spot route for easy yardage.
Use PA Sprint HB Flat or PA Shot Post from the same set to keep the defense guessing between short play-action throws and deeper shots, forcing safeties to hesitate on run fits.
