HB Blast is a downhill Iso run out of I Form Slot Close 21 personnel, with the fullback leading through the A gap to isolate and kick out the first defender past the center while the HB takes a direct handoff and hits the hole immediately. The offensive line blocks straight ahead with down blocks and combos designed to seal the interior gaps rather than pull or trap. This is a power run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, so the primary read progression is pre-snap: identify the Mike linebacker and defensive tackle alignment, then let the FB's iso block dictate whether the HB presses the A gap or bounces off the fullback's lead into the adjacent gap.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a stacked box with the Mike linebacker sitting tight behind the defensive line, since this signals run blitz recognition that can blow up the iso block before the fullback engages. Check safety depth pre-snap: if both safeties are creeping toward the line of scrimmage, the defense is likely selling out against the run and you should consider an audible. Post-snap, key the fullback's block on the first second-level defender. If the user takes control of that linebacker and beats the block with a quick shed, the play has little chance to break outside. Defenses in a 46 front or heavy run blitz packages with edge defenders crashing hard down inside can string this play out, so look for wide-nine alignments before the snap. Man coverage on the perimeter with linebackers playing downhill run fits is the toughest look for this play, while light boxes with two-high safeties in soft zone coverage give the fullback and HB a clean lane to work with.
Usage Tips
Use HB Blast on short yardage and goal line situations where you need a hard-nosed gap-and-a-half runner to convert on 3rd or 4th and 1.
Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense stacks 8 or 9 men in the box, consider audibling to a play-action shot like PA Shot Post to punish overcommitment.
Pair HB Blast with Jet Sweep and PA Jet Sweep from the same set so the defense has to respect both the interior dive and the outside jet motion, opening natural cutback lanes.
Trust the fullback's iso block and stay patient behind him rather than trying to bounce it outside, since this play is designed to win with vertical push, not lateral space.
Sequence HB Blast early in a drive to set up HB Lead Dive later, since both plays sell the same downhill action and make your play-action rollouts more believable.
