Defensive Reads

Key the linebackers at the snap since aggressive run blitzes or fast downhill flow confirm the defense bit on the play-action fake, leaving the flat and intermediate windows wide open. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the sprint-out lane or dropping into a lurk position on the flat route, as this is the most common way defenses take away the FB checkdown. Against zone coverage, identify whether the corner sinks with the vertical route or jumps the flat, since a sinking corner opens a throwing window underneath while a jumping corner clears the deep boundary route. If the defense shows a heavy edge blitz or contain rush off the sprint-out side, expect the QB to be under immediate pressure, so anticipate the quick FB flat throw as the built-in answer to beat the rush.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short/medium) when you have already established the HB run game from Slot Close to sell the fake and freeze linebackers.
Pre-snap, look for single-high safety shells or run-blitz alignments with linebackers crashing downhill, since the play-action freeze is most effective against aggressive run defenses.
If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, trust the outside vertical route on the boot side since the sprint action creates a natural throwing lane away from most defenders.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or drag if you diagnose zone coverage rolling hard to the play-action side, giving the QB a faster answer against Cover 3 sink or Cover 2 zone drops.
