PA Shot Post is a play-action shot play out of I Form Slot Close that hits off run fake to freeze the linebackers before attacking the deep middle. Off the play fake, the outside receiver runs a deep corner/go route up the sideline while the slot receiver runs a post that breaks toward the middle of the field behind the linebackers, creating a natural high low stretch on the deep half safety. This is a man beater against single high looks and a shot play designed to hit explosive gains, with the primary read starting on the post since the safety has to choose between the vertical and the post breaking underneath him, then progressing outside to the corner route if the safety jumps the post.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify if the defense is showing single high or two high safeties, since single high man coverage is where this play hits hardest. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake it opens a bigger throwing window on the post route behind them. Post snap, key the deep safety's first step, if he flows toward the post the corner route on the outside should be wide open behind him. Beware of a lurking underneath defender sitting in the post's throwing lane in zone coverage, since a lurk read here can jump the route and create a turnover. Against a hard edge blitz or overload pressure look, get the ball out on the post quickly since the play action fake eats into your protection time and the pocket collapses fast.

Call this on early downs like first and ten or second and short so the run fake actually holds the linebackers and safeties for a beat.

Check the safety alignment pre snap, if you see one deep safety in the middle of the field this play is designed to win, if you see two deep safeties bracket the post read the corner route.

Use hot routes to release the fullback or extra blocker into a checkdown if the coverage rolls hard toward the post, giving you an outlet against zone pressure.

Sequence this play after establishing HB Blast or HB Lead Dive from the same I Form Slot Close set so the defense bites on the run fake and linebackers step up before the pass routes develop.

Pair the shot post with PA Y Throwback or PA Spot later in a series so defenders start second guessing run fakes and stop flowing hard downhill on subsequent snaps.
