Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are stacked tight to the line expect quick edge fills that shut down the stretch to the perimeter. Identify safety rotation before the snap, a single high safety often means one less run defender to the play side and favors the bounce outside read. Key the defensive end and outside linebacker leverage post-snap, if they crash hard down the line the cutback lane opens for the HB. This play struggles against gap exchange stunts and scrape exchange blitzes where the defensive end sits and the linebacker fills the edge, so watch for that pre-snap alignment cue from odd front defenses. Overload blitzes to the play side with extra defenders in the box will beat this run consistently, so check for a walked up slot defender or extra man near the line before snapping it.
Usage Tips
Run this out of early down situations like first and ten or second and short to keep the defense honest and set up play-action shots later in the set like PA Deep Read or PA Pylon Sail. Check the defensive front pre-snap, this play thrives against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box and struggles against stacked eight man fronts. If the defense shows a fast flowing linebacker crew, hot route the HB to press the cutback lane rather than force it outside. Use user control on the fullback to manually pick the best angle on the kick out block rather than trusting the CPU logic against blitzing linebackers. Pair this with HB Zone Toss and HB Counter Wk in the same set to keep defenders guessing on zone versus counter action, since all three start with similar backfield flow.
