This is a check down and levels concept built around getting the HB free in space against blitzes or aggressive man coverage, with the deep in route acting as a zone beater that occupies linebackers and safeties over the middle. The primary read progression starts with the swing route to the HB as the first option versus pressure or man coverage, then works to the in breaking route if the underneath area is clogged or if the defense sits on the swing.
Defensive Reads
Watch for user controlled linebackers flying downhill on the snap, since this is the primary defender who can blow up the HB swing route before it develops. Identify two deep safety shells presnap, since Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells tend to leave the underneath flat open for the swing route against zone defenses that drop linebackers too deep. Look for man coverage indicators like a linebacker aligned tight on the HB presnap, which signals the swing route will be covered man to man and the deep in route becomes the better answer. Key on blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the HB swing acts as a built in hot route answer that beats overload blitzes if the ball comes out fast. Diagnose zone drops post snap by watching if the underneath defenders sink too deep on the snap, which opens a throwing lane for the in breaking route behind them.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or third and short when you expect man coverage or a blitz look, since the HB swing gives you a built in answer to pressure.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the defense's second level, if linebackers are crashing downhill or showing blitz, get the ball out quickly to the HB swing before the edge defender can close the running lane.
If you see zone coverage with linebackers sitting underneath, look to the deep in route since it will cross behind the shallow flat defenders and find a soft spot in the zone.
Pair this play with Mtn Snag Curls or Y-Stick Dig in the same set to keep defenses honest, since those plays attack similar areas but punish defenders who jump the swing route too aggressively.
Use motion pre-snap if available to diagnose man versus zone, and if the defense follows the HB across the formation, expect man coverage and prioritize getting the swing route the ball immediately at the snap.
