Reload RPO Zone Snag is a run pass option out of Shotgun 11 personnel that pairs an inside zone run with a snag concept to the field, giving the quarterback a true dual read at the mesh point. On the pass side, the snag combo stacks a corner route, a flat route, and an underneath snag sitting route to attack zone leverage, while the zone run gives you a downhill answer if the box is light. The primary read starts with the box count and second level flow: if the linebackers crash to defend the run, pull and work snag to corner as the progression, if they stay home in coverage give the ball on the zone read.

Defensive Reads

Read the middle linebacker depth and flow at the snap, if he sits or shuffles laterally without committing downhill the give read is likely covered so lean pass. Identify single high versus two high safety shells pre-snap since single high often signals run support that opens the snag window over the middle. Watch for the flat defender jumping the underneath snag route, that indicates a sinking zone defense that struggles to defend the corner route behind it. This concept is vulnerable to disciplined zone defenses that stay square and trust their run fits, since the quarterback can be forced to sit on a covered read. Man coverage with an overhang blitzer can beat this if the corner route runner gets picked up in press, so check the cornerback alignment before deciding whether to pull or give.

Usage Tips

Check the numbers in the box before the snap and let that dictate whether you are hunting the give read or the pass read off the top. Against single high shells with the safety cheating to the run, pull the ball immediately and work the snag route since the corner and flat combo will have soft leverage on the zone defender. Hot route the flat route to a speed out if you see aggressive underneath zone drops jumping the snag sitting spot. Use this on early downs to stay ahead of the sticks since the built in run option keeps play calling balanced and unpredictable.
