Reload PA Cross is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Close (11 personnel) that uses a run fake to hold the second level before releasing a deep crosser as the primary concept. The diagram shows the red route working across the formation from the left slot into a deep dig/cross that settles behind the linebackers, with two vertical seam/go routes stemming up the numbers on each side to clear out the safeties, and a checkdown or flat route releasing to the boundary. Underneath, the light blue route runs a shallow drag or swing action tied to the play fake, giving the quarterback a built-in outlet if the crosser is not open. This is a play-action man beater at heart because the crosser creates natural rub leverage against man coverage, but the vertical stems on both hashes also stress single-high zone shells, making the primary read progression: play-action fake, then crosser first, verticals second if the safety bites down on run action.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a two-high shell or single-high look, since single-high safeties are more vulnerable to the vertical clear-out routes opening up the crosser underneath. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they step up hard on the run fake, the crosser will have a wide throwing lane, but if they stay disciplined in their zone drops, the quarterback may have to check down to the flat or shallow drag. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness this play beats, since the crosser picks off trailing defenders through traffic. Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined linebacker drops can shut this down by squeezing the crossing lane, so be ready to hot route or check down against those looks. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker or robber defender for a potential lurk threat sitting in the crosser's path, since a well-timed user jump on that route can lead to a big turnover if the quarterback stares it down too long.
Sell the run fake by holding the left stick momentum before dropping back, since a slow or robotic play-action animation gets read instantly by user defenders. Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and medium when the defense is showing run support or a stacked box, because the deep crosser exploits linebackers who bite on the play fake. Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see two-high, hot route the crosser to sit down against zone drops, if you see one-high, trust the vertical routes to hold the free safety and let the crosser work across the field. Pair this with Reload PA Shake Bubble or PA Jet Sweep earlier in a drive to condition the defense to respect the run fake, then hit this crosser once linebackers start creeping up. Against aggressive user blitzers, consider sliding protection or using a quick hot route on the flat route to give yourself a built-in answer if the crosser gets jumped.
