Breakdown

Bench is a Deuce Close pass concept out of Singleback 12 personnel that stretches the field horizontally with double outs on both sides. Both TEs release vertically off the line before breaking hard outside into bench routes at the sticks, while the outside receiver on the left runs a deep corner to hold the safety and clear space underneath. The HB releases on a check release into the flat, giving the quarterback a built-in outlet if both bench routes are covered. The primary read starts with the corner route to hold the deep defender, then works down to the near-side bench route, with the HB flat as the last resort against a hard blitz.

Defensive Reads

Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone shells are vulnerable because the bench routes sit right in the void between the underneath zone and the deep defenders. Watch the flat defenders and curl to flat players closely, if they widen with the TE releases the corner route window opens up over the top. Man coverage teams that blitz off the edge will struggle to get a hand on the check release HB, so man press alignments with no safety help over the top are a green light for the corner shot. Defenses that drop a linebacker into a deep middle hole zone or run a Tampa 2 shell can take away both bench routes and the corner throw simultaneously, so avoid this call against that shell unless you plan to check down. If the defense shows a hard blitz with man coverage behind it, get the ball out fast to the HB flat before the protection breaks down.

Usage Tips

Look for the deep half safety alignment pre-snap, if he is shaded to the corner route side, work the opposite bench route immediately for an easy pitch and catch. Use motion or a hot route on the HB to a wheel or seam if you diagnose man coverage, since the natural pick from the TEs can spring him open against man defenders trailing. This play excels on second and medium to long or third and short because the bench routes settle in soft spots underneath zone drops. Pair Bench with PA Boot Corner Post or PA X Post Cross from the same set to keep defenders honest on the vertical shots after they start jumping the underneath outs. Against teams that user the middle linebacker to sit under bench routes, throw the corner route first to punish the vacated deep half.
