Breakdown

Zone Split Wk is an inside zone run out of Singleback Deuce Close with 12 personnel, showing two tight ends flexed to the same side to help wall off the edge. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side while the HB takes a slight split angle behind the QB, reading the frontside double team before pressing into the correct crease. This is a pure run play with no play-action or route combo, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is frontside gap to backside cutback based on how the defensive front flows.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box and check if a safety has rotated down into the alley, since an extra defender in the box signals a run blitz or run commit call. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, tight and aggressive linebackers who shoot gaps immediately are vulnerable to the natural cutback lane this zone scheme creates. Stacked fronts with a defensive tackle in the play side gap can clog the frontside crease, forcing the runner to bounce backside where a fast flowing linebacker can still make the tackle. User the play side linebacker or strong safety to fill the frontside gap and force the cutback into pursuit rather than letting the runner get to the second level untouched. Heavy blitz packages with extra defenders crashing downhill can blow this play up before the line establishes double teams, so respect all out run blitzes on early downs.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box.

Use the two tight ends to identify if the defense is walking a linebacker or safety down into the run fit, since that tells you whether to hit it frontside or set up the cutback.

Pair this with HB Stretch or Mtn HB Stretch to keep defenders honest on lateral flow before coming back to the tighter inside zone track.

On early downs against base fronts, trust your zone blocking and let the play develop rather than forcing it outside prematurely.

Mix in PA Boot Corner Post or PA Slide Y Screen off the same formation look to punish defenses that start crashing down hard on this run.
