Flood Trail is a three level flood concept out of Singleback Deuce Close 12 personnel designed to stress one side of the field vertically and horizontally. The outside receiver runs a deep corner while the inside receiver in the yellow route works a deep dig across the field, the slot runs a short drag underneath, and the running back releases to the flat off a wheel-style curl into the boundary. This is a classic Cover 3 beater since it stacks three routes at three distinct depths on the same half of the field, forcing the deep third defender and the flat defender into conflict. The primary read progression starts with the corner route deep, works down to the flat route from the running back, and comes back to the drag or dig as the checkdown against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the safety is aligned as a single high defender or split into two deep halves, since Cover 3 with one deep defender is the primary shell this play is designed to exploit. Post-snap, key the flat defender's drop, if he sinks with the corner route the flat throw to the running back should be open immediately underneath. Watch for the deep third defender to the play side widening late to the sideline, that flat foot or hesitation is the trigger to fire the corner throw over the top. This play is vulnerable to Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties who can double the corner route, so check for two high safeties before committing to the deep read. Beware of a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the underneath passing lane on the drag route, since a smart user will jump that route and bait the quarterback into a turnover.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety this is a great look to attack with the deep corner route since Cover 3 defenders will be stretched vertically.

Use the flat route from the running back as your first read on quick pressure looks or when the defense shows Cover 2 sink, since it is the fastest developing throw.

Hot route the drag runner into a deeper crossing route if you diagnose man coverage, since the natural rub from the formation creates late separation against man defenders.

Best called on second and medium to long or on early downs when you want to bait a single high shell, since the corner route needs room to work against a stressed deep third.
